Our day trips in Northern Vietnam take place around Hanoi, the country's capital whose streets surge with scooters, and are dotted with ancient pagodas and bustling old quarters.
Despite the remarkable development of Vietnam over the past 30 years, more than 60% of the population lives in rural areas where rice farming is the predominant livelihood of the people and entire families live off as little as $1-2 per day. This has driven much of the population into extreme poverty.
Our mission in Vietnam is to create opportunities for children from impoverished backgrounds to have eye-opening and inspiring experiences by taking them on a day trip with a difference!
Day trip with a difference in Hanoi
Morning - Hiking up Ba Vi Mountain
In the morning, the children set off from Hanoi for a 1.5-hour bus journey to Ba Vi National Park. Formerly a French hill station, the triple-peaked Ba Vi Mountain has been attracting visitors for decades. The group visits a local cave before hiking up an adventurous trail to the peak of Ba Vi Mountain for stunning views.
Picnic lunch
The children enjoy a picnic lunch near the peak of the mountain where there is an orchid garden and a bird garden.
Afternoon - Visit to historic French ruins
After lunch, the children take advantage of more hiking opportunities through the forested slopes of Ba Vi Mountain. Then, they go on a guided tour of the old French ruins around Ba Vi National Park. A trained guide introduces them to an old church and mansion, as well as the colonial history of the area.

Young people we support in Hanoi
Our NGO partner in Northern Vietnam is Blue Dragon Children's Foundation. The organisation started small in 2003 and has since become a powerful force for change on the streets of rural and urban Vietnam. Blue Dragon offers children in crisis the chance to turn their lives around and our day trips are one of the practical solutions that help them do that.
For children in Vietnam that are born into poverty, there is little hope of a better life. They often have no choice but to quit school and move far from home to look for work, exposing them to dangers such as trafficking, homelessness and sexual exploitation. Blue Dragon works with homeless children and families, human trafficking victims, children with disabilities, and the rural poor.
Their services for these children are holistic, including rescue and crisis care for young people in immediate danger, shelter, legal advocacy and long term support to return to school.
